Let’s be real. Social media is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s a fun way to stay connected and entertained. But on the other? It can be a major distraction from your Deen. Imagine this: You’re scrolling through TikTok or Instagram, and before you know it, hours have flown by. We’ve all been there. But did you know there are specific traps in social media that can slowly pull you away from your faith without you even noticing?
Don’t worry! Today, we’re going to break down these traps and how to avoid them like a boss, all with the wisdom of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Ready to reclaim your faith and your time? Let’s do this!
1. The Trap of Comparison
Scrolling through glamorous pictures of influencers and their “perfect” lives can seriously mess with your self-esteem. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Look at those who are lower than you (in wealth and worldly affairs), but do not look at those who are above you, lest you belittle the blessings Allah conferred upon you.” (Sahih Muslim)
Solution: Instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on improving your relationship with Allah. Make a list of your blessings every day and thank Allah for each one. Gratitude is the key to contentment!
2. The Trap of Gossiping and Backbiting
It’s so easy to fall into online gossip or ranting about people. But did you know the Prophet (PBUH) warned us about this? He said, “Do you know what backbiting is?” They said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “It is to mention about your brother something that he dislikes.” (Sahih Muslim)
Solution: If you wouldn’t say it to someone’s face, don’t type it online. Instead, use your words to spread positivity and kindness.
3. The Trap of Wasting Time
Social media can be the biggest time thief out there. The Prophet (PBUH) said, “There are two blessings which many people lose: Health and free time for doing good.” (Sahih Bukhari)
Solution: Set a time limit for your social media use. Replace some of your scrolling time with prayer, Dhikr, or learning about Islam. Imagine how much closer you could be to Allah with just a few minutes of Dhikr daily!
4. The Trap of Seeking Validation
Craving likes and comments can become an obsession. Remember, the only validation that truly matters is from Allah. The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Whoever seeks the pleasure of Allah by displeasing the people, Allah will suffice him against the people.” (Ibn Majah)
Solution: Before posting anything, ask yourself: Am I doing this for Allah or for people’s approval? Seek Allah’s pleasure, not the likes and follows.
5. The Trap of Un-Islamic Content
Let’s be honest, the internet is filled with content that can easily lead us away from the straight path. Whether it’s inappropriate music, visuals, or toxic messages, it’s all around us. The Prophet (PBUH) said, “The best of Islam is to leave what does not concern you.” (Tirmidhi)
Solution: Unfollow anything that brings negativity or goes against your Deen. Curate your feed with Islamic reminders, inspiring content, and beneficial knowledge.
6. The Trap of Neglecting Salah
Ever caught yourself scrolling during Salah time, thinking “Just one more minute…”? The Prophet (PBUH) said, “The first matter that the slave will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer…” (Tirmidhi)
Solution: Make Salah your priority. Set alarms, use prayer apps, and make it a habit to put your phone away during Salah times. Nothing is more important than your connection with Allah.
The Bottom Line: Reclaim Your Deen!
It’s not about cutting off social media completely. It’s about using it wisely and with purpose. The internet is a tool, use it to strengthen your faith, not weaken it.
Have you fallen into any of these traps? What’s your biggest struggle when it comes to social media and Deen? Let’s talk about it in the comments!
May Allah (SWT) guide us all to use our time and energy in ways that please Him. Ameen!
